If you're a homeowner, you probably can't resist having your own garden where children can play and you can sit back and unwind. A garden is one place where we feel we are one with Nature and enjoy the small pleasures of life. But without potted plants and flowers, a home garden is incomplete. If you need to find inspiration on what kinds of plans will look good, look at your neighbors' gardens and take note of what varieties of plants are being planted. That’ll give you an idea of what grows in your area.

A trip to the nursery and a quick word with the gardener will also help you pick out the type of plants you will grow in your home garden. The most common plants are flowering ones, such as roses. If you want something vivid and cheerful, sunflowers might do the trick. Flowering houseplants, like Clivia or Kaffir Lily add vibrancy and a touch of the exotic. The most popular exotic house plant and garden favorite, Sambac, brings the most wonderful aroma into your home garden. Cactus is one tropical plant that doesn’t need any special care. It can grow in any weather and is easy to grow.

If you're an experienced gardener then you can have a patch in your garden for vegetables. Grow tomatoes, broccoli, luscious rutabaga and green vegetables in your home garden. If you want an herbal patch in your garden, you can grow some lettuce, cumin, and mint. If you are living in an apartment then have a few pots on your window sill of mint, tulsi, bamboo, aloe vera and curry leaves. Apart from flavor, these plants also have medicinal traits.

If you want a fragrant addition to your garden, consider the silk mimosa. This fast growing tree has attractive fragrance and its pink flowers add beauty to its fern like leaves that are shaped like a dome. Bamboo is another tree that can be grown in your garden. According to the Chinese, bamboo attracts wealth and prosperity. Who wouldn’t want to attract those qualities?

Remember that healthy soil and plenty of water are important to your garden for plants, flowers and trees to grow. Organic gardening is one of the safest and healthiest options out there. One of the most important secrets in organic gardening is tending to the soil. Soil is the main key to growth. Soil that contains sufficient manure will guarantee that your produce will be plentiful and thriving. The more chemicals you add to the soil, the more it loses fertility. Natural ways to tend soil is to allow some earthworms to be present in the soil. These worms while moving around, ‘till’ the soil that allows air to enter beneath and allow the soil to remain fertile. Organic pesticides can enrich the soil and help your plants to be pest free. Adding dead leaves, grass and plant material will enhance the richness of the soil. This is called mulching. Cow dung would make a useful addition to your soil, as it contains many nutrients. Many gardeners and farmers use it.

As you water your garden, make sure that you do it evenly. You can use drip irrigation to do this efficiently. Nature balances itself beautifully. Through our gardens, we will be able to do our own part in protecting this planet.
