What do we do with children who spend a lot of time playing on computer games and watching television? Should we worry about such activities, or should we simply leave them to get on with it? In this article we take a look at encouraging kids to move away from such pursuits and to spend more time being active.

In order to do this, we suggest that parent spend time introducing their children to the joys of playing outdoor games. Is this always easy to do? Not in all cases - some kids will take more persuading than others. Fortunately, most children do love playing garden games.

So let's return to our first thoughts in this article. Some questions were posed about how much time kids spend playing on computer games and the like and whether we should worry. Many parents do worry about such activities.

Such concerns will tend to centre on the safety of children, particularly in the case of exposure to the internet. There may also be concerns about whether a child is being sociable enough - are they interacting with their parents, siblings and friends?

Finally, there is the issue of exercise. When you see a child watching television you quickly realise that they spend very little time moving. In effect, they are largely inactive.

This doesn't seem like very good news and recent studies into childhood obesity provide little cheer in this area. Putting the situation into context, it's clear that encouraging our kids to be more active in life will definitely be a good thing. So how can we achieve this?

Outdoor games are an excellent way of doing this. By their nature they tend to involve a lot more movement, ensuring that your kids get more exercise. They have other added bonuses too - they often involve more interaction with others and can be perfect for the whole family.

There's a wide range of options available to you as a parent and children are all individuals - this means that children will tend to like different activities. It's important to show your kids a range of garden games and then to see which inspire them the most.

Encourage them as they play and make sure that you provide them with a fun, safe environment. Once they see that exercise is fun, you'll find that you struggle to stop them from spending time playing in the garden!

By helping them to enjoy this type of play, you can help them have a better, healthier life!
