Icelandic Grass Roofs

Posted by: Alice in green roofgrass roofsgarden design on Print PDF

Grass roofs has become popular recently in Europe. They are beautiful, pratical and still original. The idea of that kind of buildings became alive because of love to ecological living.

Below you can find some historical examples from cold Iceland. Although these are not modern houses they are picturing the whole idea of grass roofs. Doesn't it look beautiful?

Sorry chaps but these are all museums with examples of traditional Icelandic farms from former times. They are not lived in today, and are very impractical, as the farms need re-building every few years due to rot. There are a few modern houses in Iceland with grass roofs, but the grass is growing on a concrete base. Surprisingly at this latitude the main problem is keeping the grass watered!

Good point! I've seen some houses with grass on the roof but they were a lot different. I am wondering is this kind of roof practical at all?

There are sheeps that don't have problem with climbing on to the roof like that and have a nice breakfast. For me - as practical as can be.
